The team is designed so that all people are composers, they create music and at the same time make a huge layer of game sounds: explosions, sounds of a working engine, track movements, shots. Update 1.0 is 1.5 years of continuous work of two composers and more than 80 thousand battles per department.

In a year and a half, two full-length albums were written. By the standards of the music industry, this is more than fast. If you take away the fact that martial music is literally endless, and take 3 minutes from each composition, it turns out that more than 2.5 hours of musical material have been written for the update.

Andrius Klimka, sound designer, composer: “I remember how I needed to make a shot of the Babakh tank - the most powerful shot in the game. Imagine what a responsibility! I needed to listen to him 250 times a day, and doing it quietly is pointless, you need to hear all the power. When I went home, my colleagues didn’t even talk to me: they knew that I couldn’t hear anything. ”

Creating a model of the tank begins with the receipt of technical specifications from historical consultants. Usually these are drawings, descriptions, and a selection of photographs for each element of the machine, which are enough to reproduce a 3D model. Sometimes it’s just impossible to find detailed information. In such cases, the team travels to the armored museum to scan a unique vehicle and get a dimensional model.

One of these tanks was the Strv-103b. After making sure that there is all the necessary information, computer graphic designers begin to build the geometry of the tank. At this stage, it is important to observe many nuances: the angle of inclination of the armor plates, the axis of rotation of the machine components, the number of bolts, the declination angles of the gun, the correct intersection of the elements. After that, there is a stage of elaboration of detail. Everything that cannot be transmitted using geometry is transferred to elevation maps (Normal Map). This can be chips, traces of a hit from a shell, milling - everything that will make the tank more unique and graphically rich. The process of creating the model is completed by the stage of applying materials. Using a previously created library of materials, designers determine where the rubber, scuff metal, paint or spilled fuel will be. The World of Tanks team is constantly on the lookout for new solutions on how to make each of the materials even more beautiful, and the tanks realistic. When the final look of the model is ready, it goes to the game engine.

Mikhail Weisser, computer graphics designer: “In the Swedish museum we took about 800 photos of the Strv-103b from all angles. When we processed the photos and built a 3D model, of course, it turned out to be so heavy that it could not be released into the game: no computers would be pulled. Therefore, we made a lightweight game model, where at the same time fine detail remained right down to the bolts. ”

New graphics in World of Tanks

First of all, World of Tanks programmers are tank players. And as players, they are trying to make tanks better: to increase realism and give people the opportunity to feel that they are driving a real machine in a combat situation, and not on some kind of toy plane in the toy world of tanks.

Three years ago, it became clear that it was impossible to improve this immersion with the help of new textures and models alone, and the content itself was greatly limited by technology - the old BigWorld engine. Therefore, the company decided to process almost all aspects of the graphics engine: from displaying small pebbles to huge mountains, from small puddles to lakes, from small blades of grass to dense forests.

In the new Core engine, much attention was paid to details, especially the player’s interaction with the outside world: the grass sways from shots, the tank gets wet when immersed in water, creates waves and leaves realistic traces. Lighting is based on the laws of nature: the update has advanced glare from the sun. A mixture of all this gives a realistic perception of the picture.

The fundamental point was not to change the system requirements and maintain performance at the same level: the new graphics are great, but what if the player does not have a very powerful machine? The game should provide a guaranteed level of quality. We succeeded, and after the upgrade, even players with weak hardware can play World of Tanks. "

Design locations. Cards

Work on the map begins in the level-design department. Level-designers take a piece of the landscape and brushstroke out some fields, somewhere forests, mark roads, paths and put up temporary houses.

Then the workpiece goes through several iterations of testing. As soon as she has more or less suitable gameplay, the workpiece moves to the supervising department. In supervising, they collect card references: analogues, pictures.

After that, the card goes to the level-art department, where additional references are collected to saturate the card. Location designers choose a region for the map and look at what pavers there are, what trees, houses, mountains, grass. After that, the map can be supplemented with finely detailed content, create textures and make animations for grass and water.

The stones became sharper, and edge geometry appeared, the cards became more voluminous. If earlier it was just a playable square, now it is 16 km. Edge geometry is not gameplay, it is a continuation of the picture in the non-game zone. Now you can drive to the edge of the map on the tank and look into the distance. ”

Tank Museum and World of Tanks Community

The World of Tanks Museum of Tanks contains things that people do with their own hands at WoT contests or simply send them to the Wargaming office: match tanks, tank slippers, knitted tanks. Those who send parcels are always contacted and offer to thank them, and it turns out that people do it just like that for their favorite game. This is an indicator of the health of the project, which shows that the creators are moving in the right direction. People get positive emotions from tanks and are ready to spend time to additionally create something for the game.

Wargaming conducts many offline activities for players and the development of patriotic themes. These are tournaments in 20 cities of the CIS, WG-fest and Tanker Day in Minsk.

The update 1.0 involved a team operating a product in the CIS region of 41 people. The team prepared all update tests, starting with internal prototypes and the first sandboxes for players, collected and processed feedback during the tests, searched for bugs and inaccuracies. Here they created news materials for the portal and hundreds of posts on social networks from the very first stage of testing. They made streams, videos, reviews and test broadcasts of all the preparatory stages of the update. They wrote songs about the update, answered players' questions, and helped with technical problems. In the days the update was launched, the operating team was on duty at night and responded to the first messages in the game on the day it was released.

Wargaming has its own university for employees. In 2017, 3,700 people underwent training in Minsk and other offices. On average, 500 people study English every year. In addition to English, the university has an online educational platform, leadership programs for managers and specialized copyright courses taught by Wargaming employees.

User experience

Wargaming has a laboratory where they conduct tests that invite real players. A lot of techniques are used here, starting from a regular interview, ending with complex biometric studies, in which they measure the player’s reaction, determine how his brain works, how he reacts to what is happening in the game, and tracks his gaze. Why is all this necessary? To answer the key questions on which it depends whether a person will play further: whether he likes what emotions he has in the process, whether he understands how to interact with our interface.

Representatives of the target audience of WoT take part in the research. Not developers or someone who has nothing to do with tanks. It is important to understand that developers and players have different backgrounds, so their opinions often do not coincide.

The person who plays in World of Tanks must feel that he is actually sitting in the tank and fighting. As life has shown, after the first tests, the representations of players and developers about what is realistic did not match. The players said: “Where did you hear such sounds?” Of course, we were surprised because our guys were at the training ground and, sitting in the tank, recorded the creaking of tracks and the crunch of the gearbox. When we started to understand, it turned out that the players considered realistic the sound of the tank that they had heard in movies, television shows or other games. As a result, now in tanks there is a sound that balances on the verge of realism and fiction, artistic realism. The players accepted this option and were happy. ”

Emotions

Over the years, World of Tanks has become a space where people come first of all for emotions: for the joy of victory, for the excitement of the fight, confidence in teammates. Players gather in real life to do good deeds, visit museums, restore equipment, and spend time with families. World of Tanks began digitally and is evolving as a game, but tanks have become part of real life that takes place outside of servers. The game unites people of different ages and different professions, it has become part of men's culture. Tanks are a topic of conversation between inveterate friends and future comrades. Obstacles have been moved to major battlefields, such as mounds of rubble and construction debris. On the territory of the coal mine, mountains of developed ore have shifted. The river in the northeast of the map will no longer have a hole, but a house will appear. And the entire eastern part of the map is completely redesigned to give this territory balance during the battle on both sides.
  • Mannerheim Line  patch 1.3 will have fresh places for ambushes and defenses in the northern and eastern parts of the map. So, after the update, new trees, defensive fortifications will appear on the map. Also on the Mannerheim Line, the lumbago that the players love will disappear - you will have to look for new ones. Many obstacles that hinder the passage have been redone or completely removed.

In general, changes in gaming locations can be called balanced. Processing processes are aimed at a quality and interesting battle for each of the cards examined. Also, on some other gaming locations, bugs found earlier were fixed.

LBZ in WOT 1.3

A new entity “Order Forms” has been added:

  b) You will receive a reward for the basic conditions of the task;
  c) The spent order form will remain embedded in the task;
  d) The pledged order form does not disappear, but is temporarily frozen until you take it back.
  3. To pick up the mortgaged order form, it is necessary to complete the task in which it is placed, with honors. Thus, you get your order form back and can reuse it.
  4. The number of order forms necessary for laying in tasks:

To summarize: order forms can be used to skip complex or uninteresting tasks for you. And most importantly: you can put order forms in the final, fifteenth task in the branch, even if the previous 14 tasks have not yet passed. Change task conditions

The tasks in each operation were revised to increase the relevance of the main award. For example, now all the tasks from the StuG IV operation can actually be performed on Tier V vehicles, from the T28 Heavy Tank Concept operation at Tier VII, and so on. However, participation restrictions have not changed. You can perform tasks of any operation even at the X level of technology.

We also made the additional conditions more varied in the final, fifteenth tasks of each branch. This is due to the fact that the additional reward for tasks completing the branches has become more valuable: now Order forms are located there.

Note! If, by the terms of the task, you need, for example, to find 5 cars in a battle, and you find 7, then obviously the task will be successfully counted. This rule is valid for all numerical conditions.

Starting from 9.20.1, upon receiving a medal from the categories “Epic Achievements” and “Heroes of the Battle”, the player will receive additional promotion in the form of a bon.
