Today we will look at the free Valentina program, which provides a set of functions and tools for creating patterns. Immediately after launch, you can begin creating a pattern. On the left side of the main window there is a toolbar divided into several tabs. The points are usually added first. You can create a perpendicular point, a bisector, a special mark on the shoulder and a dart.

After moving the object to the work area, a form will appear where you need to specify the length of the line, assign a designation to it, add a color and specify the type, for example, dotted or solid.

Editing using formulas is available. Calculations occur using input data - measurements, increments, line length or distance between points. If the formula is constructed incorrectly, an error will be displayed instead of the result and you will need to recalculate it.

The created point can be edited either manually or by entering coordinates, the window with which is located on the right in the work area. Here you can change the X and Y position, rename the point.

Adding shapes and lines

Pay attention to the creation of different lines and shapes. You don't need to create one point at a time and connect them together. Simply select the required tool in the appropriate panel, after which you will need to enter the dimensions of the figure into the table. You can also calculate dimensions using formulas, as shown above.

The entered dimensions are automatically saved in the project variable table. Use it to change specified data, add a formula, or find out information about lines, shapes, and points.

Performing operations

Consider the tab "Operations" on the toolbar. You can create a group of parts, rotate, and move objects. Operations work only with finished parts, they are not intended to move a single line or point.

Adding measurements

Often a pattern is created using specific measurements. The program provides a separate Tape add-on, in which measurements are added. You can create several of them at once so that you can quickly access them using the catalog. Measurements are divided into known and special.

In known ones, sizes are indicated according to generally accepted standards. The necessary parameters are checked by checkboxes, after which they are added to the table and saved in the catalog. In special measurements, the user himself indicates the name of the body part being measured, after which he enters the length or girth in the required unit of measurement.

Part one: background.

In general, I have been sewing some clothes for myself for quite a long time, since my school days (no, I am by no means a pensioner, although this can easily be doubted if you read my review further☺). First, using patterns from the well-known magazine Burda. Then it dawned on me that clothes designed for German women did not fit me very well, they were too wide in the back and shoulders. So I thought about making a basic pattern myself and modeling it at my own discretion.

My first test subject was a book on sewing from about the 50s... Despite all its “basicness”, my basic pattern turned out to be quite old-fashioned.. It turns out that even some principles of clothing design have changed over so many years.

Then my more successful acquaintance with the system of constructing basic patterns began, presented on the website of Anastasia Korfiati. I tried to make patterns for a men's shirt and sheath dress. All these patterns were drawn up, naturally, with a pencil on graph paper, with the calculation of numerous formulas.

This fall, the thought occurred to me that now fitted shirts and dresses seem to have become unfashionable. They were replaced by loose long models. I had a tried and tested dress pattern drawn on graph paper. It was necessary to change only a few values ​​of the allowance for the freedom of fit. But, alas! To do this, it was necessary to rebuild the entire pattern and calculate the position of each point again!

And then an idea came to my mind. After all, if all these calculations can be automated by drawing up a table in Excel, you can also force the program to draw all these lines. I agree, I’m a terrible slowdown, because this idea came to me several years later, during which I diligently moved a pencil along a ruler, drawing lines on graph paper, then transferring them to tracing paper. But recently I watched a video on YouTube, where a girl teaching cutting and sewing courses told what her students would need. And in horror I heard that among all these things there was graph paper! So it's not all that bad.

The thing is that my early ideas about programs for making patterns were limited to the kind of programs in which you enter your measurements, and at the output you get a graphic file that needs to be printed and glued.

I was not happy with this turn. I have to understand how and where things come from. This is why I liked Anastasia Korfiati’s pattern-making system. You should also write a review.

And then, having entered an idea that had just come into my head into a search engine, I came across it - Valentin’s program! In which you can draw a pattern like on graph paper, understanding where you have what, and at the same time, by making changes to measurements or increases, instantly rebuild the entire drawing! And at the same time, Valentina is free software, that is, absolutely free to use. I downloaded the release from the official website of the project.

Part two and main: Screenshots.

The program is very easy to learn. It took me three days, during which I transferred the algorithm for constructing the basis according to Korfiati to the Valentin program, at the same time understanding the intuitive interface. This is what the program looks like:

Building is elementary. From the starting point you build the first line, vertically downwards, using the formula = length of the product. Well, and so on.. anyone who is familiar with compiling basic patterns from a book will understand✍ Then I completed the sleeve and stand-up collar in the same file, saving it under a new name:


I glued the fastening bar onto the already printed pattern; for some reason it seemed easier to me. How to transfer the chest dart from the shoulder to the side seam. For this, unfortunately, the program is not entirely tailored, but what is there is just a godsend for me.

Don't pay attention to the fact that the details are layered on top of each other. This can be solved at the next stage of working with the pattern, namely, selecting the parts; for this you need to take the appropriate tool and select (in a clockwise direction, this is important) each point and curve that makes up the contour of the part. But in the end, I printed the pattern on a regular printer on A4 paper, glued them together with a glue stick, transferred the dart and glued the fastener bar, and voila, you can cut and sew) The program has a separate submodule for opening a file with measurements. You can also add your own measurements, which is what I actively did:


So now, if some of my measurements change or I want clothes with a different degree of fit, or I want to sew clothes not for myself, but for that guy (well, in this case, of course, a girl)), I will only need to change a few numbers in table of variables or create a new file with individual measurements, rather than redrawing the basis again.

Program settings

The main functions and menu of the program are located at the top, the toolbar is on the left. During operation, changes in the pattern are automatically saved. With the decimal separator, you can specify a sign that will separate the decimal and integer parts as you enter. It is worth noting that if you do not use this sign, the program will generate an error. If you want to change the language of the dots that sign the names on the pattern, use the settings for changing the language of dots. For novice users, it is recommended to enable text under the icons to speed up the learning process in the program.

Key functions of the utility

The program toolbar is divided into tabs. To start creating a pattern, use the value of the points - bisector, perpendicular. You can move an object to the work area, and then set the line length parameters, specify the type and change the color. There is the ability to edit using lines. The user manual is designed in the form of a book. Why in a book, and not video tutorials, you ask? We believe that a book is an excellent format for a source of information. Throughout our lives, we draw the most valuable information from books. We love books. At the same time, we do not discount the possibilities and value of video lessons, considering them a separate form of presenting information. "Valentina" is a cross-platform system for creating patterns using traditional methods using 2D measurement, which allows designers and designers to design and model their own clothing patterns.

The program allows you to create patterns using both standard (multi-size) size tables and the results of individual measurements.

Valentina combines new technologies with traditional methods, and this makes it truly unique. Available tools for creating patterns are sorely lacking. Many people, faced with a similar task, resort to the help of CAD systems (CAD) or graphic editors. Obviously, these programs were originally intended for completely different purposes and cannot be effectively used to solve specific problems (for example, adding allowances).
Adapting such systems to design needs only partially solves the problem.

Even after adaptation, such programs can be used to create high-quality patterns in one size, but quickly changing the pattern to suit another person (other sizes) becomes difficult. The pattern has to be created from scratch. It is at this stage that “Valentina” will be indispensable.
A correctly designed pattern allows you to simply change parameters (for example, other dimensional values) to achieve automatic restructuring of your pattern in accordance with the new values, i.e. receiving the same product for another person (different size). Without the need to rebuild the pattern manually. Or use other methods for grading patterns.

"Valentina" is a system for generating templates, where the lengths and positions of drawing lines are set by the user independently using mathematical formulas, functions and conditional operators. This makes the program suitable for any clothing design method.

The program is currently moving towards suitability for use in garment production. However, “Valentina” is a universal program and can be used not only in production, but also in small ateliers, training, as well as private tailors and sewing enthusiasts. It makes the work of tailors easier and reduces the time spent on sewing clothes.

After publishing the previous one, about programs for creating patterns on a computer, I received many letters from you with questions specifically about Valentina. Therefore, I will write about this program in more detail. I'll clarify all the questions. Read.

One of the main advantages of this program is that it free, no trials. It is publicly available, downloaded from the developers’ website and easily installed on the Windows 7 operating system and higher. And also on Mac OS.
You can choose the interface language in Russian, and this is also a good thing.

The program allows you to create parametric patterns. It is to create, and not to be content with the existing pre-installed ones. This means that we can enter a pattern into the program using any cutting method. This is a wonderful opportunity! We can learn from any master, cutter or designer and work in the program using any method of creating patterns. Or we can improve any technique ourselves and create our own parametric patterns.

What is a parametric pattern?

Parametric pattern- this is a drawing that instantly changes to a different size when new measurements and increases are entered. This happens due to the fact that when constructing points, we can enter into the program the formulas that we use when constructing drawings on paper. And to change the pattern to a different size, we simply change the measurements and allowances in a separate file, without touching the drawing itself. Do you think this is convenient?

We enter the measurements in a separate file, click on the “Agree on measurements” button and the drawing itself is rebuilt to the new size.
We need to construct such a drawing in the program only once. In the future we will use it many times to obtain patterns for other sizes.

Working with the program

In order to start using the parametric capabilities of the program, we need to create file with measurements. It is created outside the program itself and opened using the application Tape. This application is installed on your computer at the same time as the program. In file Tape We can use custom or standard measurements. Using certain measurements, we can use the database of measurements preset by the program or enter our own unique measurements.

Then we open the program itself and create a new one file for new drawing. We can create several drawings in one file. Look at this picture.

This is a file with a drawing of a shoulder product and a drawing of a sleeve. Both drawings are in the same file. Which is very convenient. After all, when constructing a sleeve, we use control and auxiliary measurements from the base drawing - this is the vertical diameter of the armhole and the height of the sleeve collar.

The same is true when constructing a collar outside the neckline. It will be convenient for us to create it using the values ​​(dimensions) of lines and curves from the base drawing, for example, the length of the neck of the shelf and back. The program shows us all these values ​​and sizes in variable table. As you can see in the figure below, in the table we can find out the length of the lines, the length of the curves, the angle, the radius...


The same table contains increases and auxiliary variables used in parametric patterns.

The collar that we are building will be created as a continuation of the front drawing. And we will be able to “separate” it from the drawing of the shelf and back when forming the parts.

Details- these are the highlighted contours of the patterns. In this screenshot you can see the back part, the front part and the sleeve part.

These are the same patterns that will go to print.
We can create pieces with or without seam allowances. Set different allowance sizes in different sections of the pattern.

In addition, we can transfer any design lines and elements to the parts. In this example, these are the chest line, waist line and hip line on the back and front (dotted lines). Mid-sleeve line on sleeve. Bust and waist darts.

You can mark the direction of the grain thread on each part. Specify the name of the part. The letter for this set of parts. In the example above, this is the letter A.
For each part, you can select the type of material, the number of parts to be cut, and the option of placing the part on the fabric.

And one more convenient feature is the ability to create notches - control marks for convenient alignment of cut details when basting or stitching.

If you are at least a little bit of an entrepreneur, then you probably guessed what opportunity all of the above marks on parts give us besides convenience?)).

After creating parts with these lines, marks, and notches create a layout. That is, we arrange the parts in such an optimal way that it takes a minimum of paper to print them. It is to save our paper that the program developers worked hard on the layout mode settings.


Here we can select the sheet format and layout options for our parts. And then save the layout and print the patterns on a regular printer or plotter.
