Dear colleagues!

The joint scientific forum, including the International Scientific Conference on Bioorganic Chemistry “XII Readings in Memory of Academician Yuri Anatolyevich Ovchinnikov” and the VIII Russian Symposium “Proteins and Peptides” with a competition of works by young scientists, was held at the IBCh RAS from September 18 to 22, 2017. The forum, organized by the IBCh RAS together with the Russian Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists, with the support of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, was attended by about 700 scientists from Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan and more than 40 foreign speakers - world famous scientists in the field of bioorganic chemistry molecular biology and biotechnology, including Nobel Prize winners Aaron ciechanover   (report “Ubiquitinylation system: from fundamental mechanisms to pathogenesis and targeted drugs »), Thomas Südhof   (report “On the molecular principles of neural circuits   and Arieh warshel   (report “Fundamentals of Enzymatic Activity »).

Professor of Sheffield University also delivered lectures. Michael blackburn   (How do enzymes catalyze the fomforil residue? The paradox is unraveled!) And professor Joseph Schlessinger   from Yale University (The molecular basis for the action of endocrine fibroblast growth factors helps to identify new relationships between metabolic disorders, liver cancer and new therapeutic approaches).

In addition to lectures, the forum included 17 PLENARY LECTURES AND 3 PLENARY REPORTSread by the IBCh RAS staff and forum guests:V.V. Vlasov A.G. Gabibov, P.G. GeorgievV.V. Govorun, S.M. Deev , O.A. Dontsova, Moncef Zouali, Patrick Masson,K.S. Mineev   (instead of A.S. Arsenyev), IN. Popov, Amelia P. Rauter, A.V. Familyanov , Yuri Sykulev, Elias Toubi, Alain Friboulet, Martin Herrmann andIN AND. Tsetlin A.A. Belogurov,A.A. Vasilevsky   and Andrey Reshetnyak.

The forum worked 5 SECTIONS, at which 164 reports were heard, including:

Search and isolation of new natural peptides and proteins. Peptidomics. Proteomics (Chairman: V.M. Govorun)

Biological functions and mechanisms of action of peptides and proteins (chairs: S.M. Deev, S.N. Kochetkov)

Peptide synthesis. Protein Engineering (V.I. Deigin, D.A. Dolgikh)

Physicochemical methods for studying the structure of peptides and proteins. The relationship "structure function"
   (chairs: R.G. Efremov, A.V. Finkelstein)

Chemistry and Biology of Enzymes
   (Chairs: S.D. Varfolomeev, S.D. Rumsh)

Innovative drugs based on peptides and proteins (chairpersons: NF Myasoedov, TV Ovchinnikova)

Biotechnology (Chairs: V.G. Debabov, A.I. Miroshnikov)

The second day of the forum was a great success. SESSION   “Ionic channels and receptors of the nervous system: structure, physiology and diseases”, which was organized by corresponding member of the RAS V.I. Tsetlin, inviting the speakers of leading world scientists working in this field. Viktor Ionovich emphasized that in recent years a large stream of work has been associated with cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies, structures with antagonist agonists appear, and new possibilities for creating drugs open up. By the way, as it became known after the forum, the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded precisely for the development of cryoelectronic microscopy. One of the most striking reports was the report of Professor P.D. Brezhestovsky is the largest world leader in the field of receptorics, who spoke about connectomy, optosensorics, optogenetics and other modern techniques, such as using light to color different parts of the brain.

Other SESSION   - “Bioengineering of plants” - was held under the leadership of Sh.I. Salikhova, who headed the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan for many years. The Chairman noted the high level of the session and emphasized that, in his opinion, the purpose of the forum was to identify competitive work and the best research.

The organizing committee of the forum gave young scientists, leaders of the IBCh RAS directions, also a speech before the forum participants by organizing a plenary SESSION "Today and tomorrow IBH." Its speakers were: K.A. Lukyanov, I.V. Smirnov, I.A. Fesenko, D.M. Chudakov, I.V. Shelukhina andI.V. Yampolsky.

The Forum was held COMPETITION OF YOUNG SCIENTISTSaimed at encouraging creativity in research. The competition was attended by 130 young scientists under the age of 35 who are engaged in research in the field of bioorganic chemistry, molecular biology and biotechnology. Scientists presented poster presentations, which were evaluated by an expert commission and as a result chose the 20 best works presented on the final day of the forum in the form of oral presentations.

The first place in the youngest age group of the competition was taken by Alexander Gopanenko, junior researcher at the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine SB RAS (Novosibirsk) for his report “Human ribosomal protein eL29 - a regulator of translation of mRNA genes involved in specific cellular cascades”.

The first place in the competition among candidates and doctors of science was taken by Stanislav Terekhov, a researcher at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, who made a presentation entitled “Using ultra-high-performance screening to select new biocatalysts and antibiotics from combinatorial libraries and the natural biodiversity of microorganisms”.

Within the framework of the forum, two SATELLITE SYMPOSIUM: “Evolution of proteom research technologies” from Helikon Company and Bio-Rad Laboratories and “Sources of synchrotron radiation and XFEL as methods of complex structural biology” from “SyncFELmed” company. In addition, sponsoring firms - Diaem, GalaHim and Merck - held their MASTER CLASSES   for participants who, according to the organizers of the forum, went at a decent level and attracted a large and interested audience.

The organizers did not limit themselves to the audience of those present at the forum: plenary lectures and reports were recorded and, with the consent of the speakers, are posted on the Internet. Actual lectures of all three Nobel laureates are already available for listening. In the near future, other plenary lectures and reports by leading scientists from the world and Russia who took part in the forum will be posted on the network. Brilliant performances will be available to a wide range of specialists.
