Surikov Moscow Art Institute  considered the successor to the Moscow School, which taught painting, sculpture and architecture, and whose history has been going on since 1832. It all started with a small group of art lovers who founded an art club in 1832, and in 1843 this club was converted into a school.

After 1917, the school was transformed into the second State art workshops. And in 1920 it was renamed the Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops, which were rebuilt in 1927 into the Higher Artistic and Technical Institute. In 1930, the Art and Technical Institute was disbanded into several independent institutes. In 1934, the Moscow Institute of Fine Arts with the faculties of graphics and painting appeared on the basis of the graphic faculty. In 1937, the institute was renamed Moscow State Art Institute.

At the same time, at that time three departments of the institute were combined into one, this is the department of painting, the department of graphics and sculpture.
