What do you call residents of St. Petersburg, Tula, Arkhangelsk, Kursk, Perm?

It is generally accepted that a cheerful New Year holiday came to us from Byzantium along with the Christian religion.  However, pagan roots are clearly traced in the folk traditions of the New Year's celebration, which means that they originated long before the Baptism of Russia. Unfortunately, we did not have any information about how the Slavs celebrated the pre-Christian New Year.

When our ancestors adopted the European Julian calendar, the new year began for them to begin March 1. But it was only an official holiday, not particularly revered by the people. If in the Mediterranean countries the beginning of March coincided with the beginning of agricultural work, then in Russia, and especially in the north of Russia, snow still lay on the fields at that time. Therefore, festive ceremonies dedicated to the winter solstice, when "the old dies and the new sun is born," were much more popular among the people.

In 1492 (and according to other sources - in 1348), the Orthodox Church, according to the decision of the Council of Nicaea, postponed the New Year from March 1 to September 1. Since then, in Russia began to meet the new year in the fall. This holiday also could not become popular. The beginning of September coincided among the peasants at the height of the harvest, when there was no question of rest. However, many official ceremonies were timed to coincide with the New Year. On the eve of the beginning of the new year throughout Moscow, they sounded the bells, and the next day a large crowd of people gathered on Red Square, which the sovereign congratulated.

But this tradition did not last long. Wanting to keep up with the Western countries, Peter the Great forbade the Russians to celebrate the new year in September. By special decrees of December 15 and 19, 1699, the holiday was postponed to January 1, and the chronology was now carried out not from the creation of the world, but from the Nativity of Christ. And if earlier it was not customary for ordinary people to wish each other a Happy New Year, then from now on it has become everyone’s duty.

The first New Year was celebrated very noisily: on the night of December 31 to January 1, 1700, people were entertained with festive fireworks and a parade on Red Square. And after 4 years, all New Year's celebrations were moved to St. Petersburg. Under Peter I, mass festivals and masquerades at the Peter and Paul Fortress became especially popular. On these masquerades, both commoners and nobles, led by the Emperor himself, had fun.

As expected, the “winter” New Year did not take root in Russia right away. For a long time, our ancestors tried secretly to celebrate the September New Year, but Peter fought quite fiercely with such attempts. He strictly ensured that by January 1 all houses were decorated with spruce, juniper or pine branches, which at that time were supposed to be decorated with nuts, fruits, and even eggs. Gradually, the Russians began to get used to the new holiday; people developed new traditions and beliefs. For example, a plentiful festive table began to be considered a guarantee of family wealth for the entire coming year. At the beginning of the 19th century, champagne appeared in Russia. Soon, this drink became an integral part of every New Year's table, as it remains to this day. During the reign of Emperor Nicholas I, whole Christmas trees gradually came to replace ornaments from coniferous branches. The tradition of decorating spruce for New Year and Christmas entrenched somewhere in the middle of the XIX century. Around the same time, the famous goose in apples appeared on the New Year's table.

The Soviet era has become a kind of test for the New Year and Christmas holidays. Of course, now we are celebrating the New Year not exactly as our ancestors met it, and yet the mood of a merry winter holiday, the traditions of which have developed over the centuries, lives in us to this day.
